Gopher Facts

- The word gopher means "tortoise".
- Gophers teeth are like finger nails they never stop growing.
- Gophers teeth can protect them from snake strikes.
- Can move 2 -3 tons of soil to the surface each year.
- Rarely leave the tunnel system
- Gophers do not hibernate.
- Gophers mate 2 -3 times per year.
- Gestation last 18-19 days.
- Gophers give birth to 3-4 pups
- Eyes and ears open about 26 days after birth.
- Cheek pouches open on the outside.
- Gophers can turn cheek pouches inside out for cleaning.
- Gophers live in coastal regions.
- Gophers can apply 20,000 pounds of pressure with their bite.
- Gopher burrow mounds are often confused with mole mounds.
Gophers live in fairly large burrow systems that may cover an average area of between 150 to 2,500 square feet. The burrows are approximately 2.5 to 4.0 inches in diameter. Feeding burrows or Feed Holes usually are 4 to 10 inches on average below ground, and the nests and food storage rooms can be as deep as 4-6 feet. Gophers close the entrance to the burrow system with dirt or mud plugs. Short, angled lateral tunnels join the main burrow system to the surface, gophers create these to push approximately 2 tons of soil per year to the surface to construct the central tunnel system.
Why Gopher Removal and Gopher Control is Important

Removing Gophers in Sensative Areas

In large areas such as vineyards, parks, large landscape areas and properties, it is best to begin a trapping program.  A trapping program consists of a service technician visiting the property between 1 - 3 times per week initially to reduce the population and then scale it back accordingly until the gopher population is under control.

The service technician will walk the property to identify gopher activity, he will then log the location and place traps and mark them with orange flags, then return to remove the gopher (s)  Your service technician will arrive each scheduled visit to service traps, he will then let you know when the gopher population has been reduced enough so he can reduce the visits.
The number of visits to a property for gopher service will depend on the size of the property and the current gopher population.

Gopher Damage

Gophers often invade landscape and gardens, feeding on many garden trees, plants, vines and shrubs. A single gopher tunneling through a garden can inflict considerable damage in a short time. Gophers also chew and damage PVC water lines and lawn sprinkler systems. Their tunnels can carry off irrigation water, which may lead to soil erosion. Gopher mounds on lawns interfere with mowing equipment and ruin the aesthetics of well-kept landscape and lawn.

Gopher Trapping

Gopher trapping is the most humane way to remove gophers.  The traps kill the gophers quickly so we can return and remove them from the tunnels.  Most of the time there is one gopher per tunnel system, but during mating season from November to April there will be more than one gopher.
Safest Method for Children & Pests
When you have children & pets in the yard, the last thing you need to worry about is gopher poison that your children or pet may dig up.  Trapping the gophers allows us to know for sure that the gopher is gone.  Gopher poison you never really know.
